Billy Bob’s Tire and Bible

There used to be a store near Valdosta, GA that sold groceries, tires and bibles (really). I stopped in on the way to a canoe trip in the Okefenokee Swamp about 20 years ago. It has been a joke between those of us on the trip ever since.

I have been reminded of it lately as I see some businesses trying to add offerings to the menu to help “broaden the customer base” in the midst of the pandemic.

The temptation is strong, especially in the current environment, to grasp for straws; anything to create revenue. Add this service, that product or new feature. Whatever it takes!

Adding new offerings is fine, as long as they align with your brand and “fit” who you really are. Be careful about the choices you make. When things clear up in the future, you don’t want to leave the public (and your customer base) confused.

Choose wisely.
